Stand Up to Cancer But Not to War

The Big Three anchors appeared together today on "Today" to promote an initiative raising funds to fight cancer called "Stand Up to Cancer." Kudos to the networks for pursuing that charitable goal.

At the same time, they addressed the claim in former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan that the so-called liberal media was anything but when it came to the Iraq War. Liberal blogger Glenn Greenwald deals with their reactions far better than I could.

While it's laudable that the anchors will help make headway in the fight against cancer, it's a little unfortunate that they aren't so courageous when it comes to just doing their fundamental jobs.

During the Writers' Strike We Watched As Much TV As Ever

A report just released by Nielsen - you know, the ratings people - has found that Americans watched as much TV as ever during the three-month long writers' strike. The Hollywood Reporter has the story:

"The report concluded that the industrywide work stoppage lowered the average Live+7 primetime total viewer ratings on the four major broadcast networks by 6.1% from the beginning of the walkoff in November to its conclusion in mid-February. Yet when Nielsen examined the number of households using television (including watching daytime, VOD, cable and other sources), the numbers showed a 0.5% increase during the strike.

"So viewers might have watched fewer primetime hits, but they didn't use their televisions any less."

Well, you've got to keep those TVs warm or else they freeze up on you. No?
