10月23日 What Color Is Your Parachute?
Last Wednesday night I was watching my stories and I noticed that both "Gossip Girl" and "Dirty Sexy Money" have minor characters who work at art galleries. It makes sense - galleries are probably pretty easy to lease out for filming, and as far as character development goes I think "works at an art gallery" is shorthand for "creative, hip, but not a slave to the muses." This got me thinking about some other professions for TV characters and what they're supposed to mean: Chef/cook = Creative, but also a total people-pleaser Might confuse crazy, ill-advised behavior for spontaneity. Hardly ever depicted as having to work the crazy hours that real cooks work. Sookie from "Gilmore Girls," Pacey from "Dawson's Creek," Monica from "Friends." Interior designer: = Creative, but also pretty materialistic Neurotic and unlucky in love. There will probably be shenanigans when they're caught in a client's house while the client is supposed to be away. Grace from "Will & Grace," everybody on "Designing Women." Journalist = Witty, dogged, and a wee bit self-absorbed They talk about "the story" a lot but don't seem to spend any time doing grunt work. They only ever seem to talk about so-called human interest stories and are offered plum positions at crucial moments. Will from "Alias," Lois from "Smallville," Rory from "Gilmore Girls." Psychiatrist = Kooky and self-absorbed Also given to embarrassing family members on a regular basis. May possibly have some bizarre hobbies and make terrible (but not necessarily Freudian) puns. Frasier from "Cheers" and "Frasier," Jason from "Growing Pains," Retail/sales = Funny, down-to-earth, and not living up to his/her potential Doesn't even pretend to be interested in his or her job, which is refreshing. Hates the store manager, who is inevitably a jerk. Hangs out at the store after hours a lot, because maybe big fake stores are good for filming in too?Doesn't really have a five year plan.
