July 02 'Predator' to Continue Despite Suicide, Dropped ChargesThe "Dateline NBC" series "To Catch a Predator" has had something of a setback recently. A Texas prosecutor committed suicide after he was one of the people who got caught up in the sting operation. And the D.A. responsible for deciding whether or not to go forward with the other 24 cases said they were too screwed up to actually prosecute.
The New York Post is reporting that "Dateline" is going to have at least two more segments this month.
Call me naive, but I would think that the experience in Texas would get "Dateline" to re-assess what it's doing.
Sure, it's cheap to put together these segments and they pull in the ratings. And even hardened criminals hate pedophiles.
But shouldn't NBC be putting the resources it's using on the show elsewhere? Like substantial journalism?
And even if you're going to go forward with this kind of show, shouldn't it be done without the involvement of the advocacy group that messed up the Texas cases so badly?
Will the inevitable lawsuit from the late prosecutor cause "Dateline" to change its mind? Probably not.
I think it'll take a mass defection of viewers. I wish I could understand the appeal in watching that sort of show in the first place.
