'Arrested Development' Finale … Season or Series?!

Perhaps it's just wishful thinking, but Fox issued a press release about the remaining four episodes of "Arrested Development," which will air as a two-hour marathon on Feb. 10, and they refer to the marathon as the show's "season" finale, NOT "series" finale.

Yeah, okay, Feb. 10 is a Friday, which means the network's not exactly giving the show big play on its schedule, but still … maybe there's hope for the show yet, since Fox hasn't officially called the episodes a series finale?

Meanwhile, about the marathon: If you thought those last couple of meta episodes, in which the show's writers mirrored the show's on-the-brink-of-cancellation status into the Bluth fam's storyline, were over the top, here's a sneak peek at the finale's storylines:

- While entertaining the residents of a senior citizens home, teen George Michael (Michael Cera) stages a mock wedding with his secret crush, Maeby (Alia Shawkat), who he thinks is his cousin, though we know she's adopted and isn't a biological Bluth.

- "American Idol" reject William Hung guest stars as he performs with his "band," William Hung and the Hung Jury, at a mock trial set up to judge the Bluths' shenanigans.

- Speaking of judge and trials: Who better to preside over the Bluth trial than a real judge, guest star Judge Reinhold!

- Michael (Jason Bateman), Buster (Tony Hale) and Gob (Will Arnett) go to Iraq.

- And, FINALLY, we get to see the Bateman sibs together, as Michael finds out he may have a long-lost sister he knew nothing about, and she's played by Jason Bateman's real-life sis, "Family Ties" star Justine Bateman.
How GREAT are these episodes going to be?! Even if the marathon is a series finale, at least the show is going out with its freak flag flying, and would we have it any other way?

'arrested development' is such a smart, funny, fast, and irreverent show, i'm amazed it passed exec. review. could this show keep going for a few more years and get weirder and more warped. i sure think so, and i hope fox has the will to keep it going. fox already has a home for its shows that cannot meet its pseudo-subversive criteria (witness the wink-wink nudge-nudge wrap it all up in a conservative family dynamic 'simpsons' and 'malcom'--and the yanking of 'family guy' when it didn't toe the line). it would be fitting for this viewer to find both of the most original shows in years--rescue me and arrested development--as anchors for equally edgy fare. how many ultra-profitable peep shows about fat celebrities, sheep brain frappes, bratty kids, country-city mouse spouse swaps, ad nauseum are we supposed to tolerate before we switch off?
