I Wasn't the Only One Up Late Last Night

    ActorsAyu_Jesse_56833410_400

I'm pretty tired from staying up late watching the Oscars last night. Kate Winslet! Sean Penn! Slumdog! If you happened to miss the show we've got some pretty awesome coverage right here.

I'm eager to hear what you guys thought about last night's broadcast. And now for more coffee.

    The Not-So-Shocking SAG Award Winners

ActressAm_Steve_16499407_400 It's award season, and we're watching so you don't have to! Which TV stars took home SAG awards last night? Well, if you watched the Emmys you won't be too surprised at the way the SAGs went down.

Hugh Laurie won Best Actor in a Drama for "House." Shocking, eh? Hey, I'm not complaining.

Best Actress? Sally Field racked up another award for "Brothers and Sisters"

Alec Baldwin won Best Actor in a Comedy and Tina Fey won Best Actress.

The cast of "Mad Men" won Best Drama Ensemble and "30 Rock" took Best Comedy Ensemble.

Oh, and the miniseries category! Paul Giammati and Laura Linney won Best Actor and Best Actress respectively for their work in John Adams.

    Golden Globes, The Morning After

Golden Globes Arrivals Kate Winslet and Tracy Morgan had a good time at last night's Golden Globes. Did anyone else? I don't really think so. I know that I was, well, pretty bored by the time last night's broadcast wrapped up. (Thankfully it only ran about four minutes over.)

Kudos to HBO's John Adams miniseries, "30 Rock," the entire slightly daffy cast and crew of Slumdog Millionaire and, of course, double award winner Kate Winslet. Maybe everybody in Hollywood should take advice on their roles from Ricky Gervais!

If you missed the show, check out our minute-by-minute coverage.

Britney to 'Perform' (Appear?) at the VMAs

Variety says that Britney Spears will open the 2008 Video Music Awards...but she won't be singing or dancing or even making out with Madonna:

"It's Britney, baby, one more time. Despite her train-wreck performance at the MTV Video Music Awards last year, the network confirms Spears will kick off the show once again. But it won't be a performance. Instead, MTV Networks Music Group President Van Toffler said Wednesday, it'll be something 'fun and unexpected' on Sunday night's show."

Fun and unexpected, eh? Well, I'm scared. We don't have long to wait: the VMAs air this Sunday at 9:00 on MTV.

How I Met Your Lighting Director

I have to say, the Creative Arts Emmys are getting cooler.

Kathy Griffin made her infamous "Suck it, Jesus" speech there, and the cast of "The Office" made quite a splash too.

Now Sarah Chalke and Neil Patrick Harris have been tapped to host this year's festivities.

The ceremony takes place on September 13 but won't be broadcast until the following week.

The Emmys Are Getting More 'Real'

Guess who's getting his very own Emmy category? Ryan Seacrest! Okay, not really, but The Emmys are adding a "Best Reality Host" category:

"'I look at reality as part of what holds up television as a whole," says Craig Plestes, who oversees reality TV for NBC Universal. 'You need nonscripted series to be one of the legs that holds up that table.'

"To make things interesting, the category's first five nominees - Tom Bergeron of 'Dancing with the Stars,' 'Survivor's' Jeff Probst' 'Project Runway's' Heidi Klum,' 'Deal or No Deal's' Howie Mandel and 'American Idol's' Ryan Seacrest - will host the awards show itself."

I have mixed feelings about this idea. On the one hand, of course reality TV show hosts deserve recognition. On the other hand, anything that helps reality TV gain even more of a stranglehold over network programming makes me cranky.

Wolfgang Puck Won’t Watch Your Cooking Show Unless You’re Dead

I was lucky enough to snag a quick interview with culinary captain of the guard Wolfgang Puck yesterday. Picture the chef at Spago in Beverly Hills standing in front of a buffet table loaded with hamburgers, salmon, kebabs and pretty much anything else you can grill. He loves to grill! He’ll tell you all about it himself, don’t worry!

When I asked him about his predilection for grilling French toast he seemed disappointed in me for not thinking bigger and not thinking about proteins!

“The great thing about this grill is that it comes with a grill plate and a griddle plate, so you can do everything,” Puck said. “You can have meat, sausage or bacon on the grill side and then make your eggs and pancakes on the griddle. It’s a lot more interesting that way! It’s a lot better than a cheese sandwich. Cheese sandwiches are boring and cold, but everyone from a grandmother to a three year old likes a grilled cheese sandwich.”

Puck moved to the United States in the 1970s and cooked in restaurants all over the country before opening Spago on the Sunset Strip, so he certainly has some insight into what Americans like to eat and drink. (Though, for the record, I do enjoy a “cold” cheese sandwich. My lunch today was goat cheese and tomatoes on a baguette, and it didn’t bore me.) How does he think tastes are changing? He thinks people are cooking at home more, and that it’s all thanks to TV:

“The taste of Americans in food and wine has changed partly because of TV. People can learn how to cook from TV. They can learn from the Food Network, or they can learn from my show on the Fine Living Channel. I love teaching people how to cook. When I do these shows on the Home Shopping Network it’s a ten hour cooking class. You can learn a lot that way. I teach people to eat better and cook for themselves. If people learn to cook at home it’s better, because they eat better, and then there’s not such a problem with obesity.”

I agree with Chef Puck that TV is helping people take more of an interest in food and cooking. All kinds of shows, not just “Wolfgang Puck” on Fine Living. I asked him to tell me what his favorite cooking show is right now, and I didn’t get much of an answer. “I watch very little TV because I’m always at the restaurant,” he said. “I used to watch Julia Child’s show, because she was my friend. I hear Gordon Ramsay is very popular, so that’s good for him. Mario Batali has that show on the Food Network that does very well, he’s a great chef.”

Okay, so he doesn’t watch “Top Chef”…or “Hell’s Kitchen.” Or, come to think of it, pretty much anything on The Food Network. Hmm. But he was on “Iron Chef” – Puck battled Morimoto in 2004, and he won – so he at least watches that show, right? Not so much.

“You can learn about food from watching cooking shows but the food on “Iron Chef” is food for restaurants. More like a fantasy, not things you would cook at home every day. I liked being on the show, but then I didn’t watch that many episodes.”

Well, there you have it. Wolfgang Pucks is just too busy to watch TV. At any rate, he’ll be grilling all weekend long on the Home Shopping Network. He wants to make sure you’re ready for Labor Day. (And I’m sure he wouldn’t mind selling you a Wolfgang Puck Tri-Grill with Removable Drip Tray while he’s at it.

    Let's Go to the Mall!

Tonight at nine you can catch MTV's made-for-TV musical "The American Mall." The movie was made by the producers of "High School Musical" and it's pretty much exactly like "High School Musical," except it's, you know, set in a mall.

The story centers around Ally, a teen who works in her mom's music store but has big dreams: she wants to attend the New England Conservatory. Mom wants her to study business instead. (Hey, remember when Superstar came out and it had pretty much the same plot?) Ally is secretly in love with a janitor...a janitor who rocks! Joey, the object of her affection, is in a band with all the other mall janitors. (Hey, remember when they did that on "Scrubs?") All the band's instruments get stolen, so the janitorial jam band is forced to kowtow to the powerful mall owner and his bratty, entitled, beautifully dressed daughter. (Are the shades of Constance Billard to be thus polluted?)

Hey, don't watch this thing for the plot, okay? If musicals are your thing you won't be disappointed!

Yes, I'm Looking Forward to Shark Week

    Veer_CCP0018202_m

Summer. How do you sum up summer? Strawberry season, raspberry season, tomato season. Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Shark Week, Labor Day. I'm not the only one who sees Shark Week as one of the big summer milestones, am I? Well it's coming! Shark Week starts on Sunday!

Shark Week 2008 looks like it'll be the best yet. There are six new programs, not to mention all of our old favorites. I'm pretty excited about the two-hour "Mythbusters" shark special that airs Sunday night at 9:00. On Monday there's "Day of the Shark," which takes a look at six recent shark attacks. Eep. We'll get a "Dirty Jobs" shark special, too, on Tuesday night at 9:00. After that there's "How Not to Become Shark Bait." Apparently the Discovery Channel actually found someone willing to test out popular theories about what attracts sharks.

Discovery.com is getting in the game with a special Shark Week site. Try the Sharkrunners game, trust me.

Performers include Pearl Jam, The Foo Fighters, Tenacious D, The Flaming Lips and Incubus...and The Who, of course. Do you want to know who's playing the Pinball Wizard? It's not Elton John. Give up? How about Rainn Wilson! You know that's going to be amazing.

"VH1's Rock Honors Bash: The Who" airs tonight at 9:00.

    Fireworks and 'That 70s Show'

Maroon990421-2 It's the 3rd of July! That means a day off tomorrow for most of us. So what's on TV?

If you're interested in fireworks, NBC has the Macy's 4th of July fireworks show at 9:00. Natalie Morales and Tiki Barber will host and Natasha Bedingfield, Gavin DeGraw and Kenny Chesney will perform along with Katharine McPhee and Jordan Sparks of "American Idol." Early birds might want to check out PBS' "A Capital Fourth" at 8:00. They've got fireworks and Tchaikovsky on tap. Jimmy Smits will host and Huey Lewis and the News, Jerry Lee Lewis and Taylor Hicks will perform.

If you're not so interested in fireworks there's still plenty to see. AMC is showing all of the Jaws films. ABC Family has a "That 70s Show" marathon. FX has a "King of the Hill" marathon. For anyone feeling extra patriotic, HBOe is showing the John Adams miniseries in its entirety starting at 1:00 pm. Want more TV marathons? Check out this list over at Interesting Pile.

We Like Shows About Fake Doctors, So How About Real Ones?

    109866_0199_pre

Tonight ABC is airing the first installment of "Hopkins," a six-part documentary shot on location at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins hospital. We'll meet doctors and patients and see what real drama lurks within the hospital's corridors. The crew was given almost full access to all areas in the hospital, so this could be fascinating. Or depressing. Or scary. (Says the girl who still holds her hand over her face during the surgery scenes of "Grey's Anatomy.")

The documentary focuses on the doctors' and patients' personal lives as well as their professional ones, so don't expect it to be all crash carts and CAT scans.

"Hopkins" airs tonight at 10:00 on ABC.

    Remembering George Carlin

GeorgeCar_Maury_5856130_400 I know you guys were as sad as I was to hear that George Carlin passed away last weekend. NBC is honoring him by rebroadcasting its 1975 debut - George Carlin was the host.

Legendary producer Lorne Michaels had this to say: "You never forget the people who were there at the beginning. George Carlin helped give 'Saturday Night Live' its start as our first host. He was gracious, fearless, and most important of all, funny."

HBO is also paying tribute to Carlin by airing some of his comedy specials tonight and tomorrow night. I especially like "Playing with Your Head," but you'll have to stay up awfully late if you want to watch it. It's worth it, though, I promise. Here's the complete schedule:

    Tonight:
    8:00 p.m.       George Carlin at USC (1977)
    9:30 p.m.       George Carlin Again! (1978)
    11:00 p.m.      Carlin at Carnegie (1983)
    midnight        Carlin on Campus (1984)
    1:00 a.m.       Playin’ with Your Head (1986)

    Tomorrow:
8:00 p.m.       What Am I Doing in New Jersey? (1988)
    9:00 p.m.       Doin’ It Again (1990)
    10:00 p.m.      Jammin’ in New York (1992)
    11:00 p.m.      Back in Town (1996)
    12:05 a.m.      You Are All Diseased (1999)
    1:00 a.m.       It’s Bad for Ya (2008)

'Top Chef' Reunion: Who Will Be the Fan Favorite?

NUP_110340_0432 Tonight Bravo is airing the "Top Chef" reunion special at 10:00. We'll get to find out what everybody's been doing since taping wrapped up...and who got voted fan favorite.

Who do you guys think it will be?

In other "Top Chef" news, Grub Street says that season five will take place in New York City:

"Given how aggressive the bloggers were in Chicago (they scoped out the chefs with telescopic lenses), we can only imagine what will happen when New York’s blogging corps gets a beachhead."

I'm getting my "Veronica Mars"-style spy kit all ready to go.

    Shocker! Teens Love 'Gossip Girl'

    GOSSIP GIRL

The CW might still be fretting over ratings, but they should feel good today. "Gossip Girl" has received a mind-blowing 14 Teen Choice Award nominations for its freshman season. Chace Crawford and Penn Badgley are up against each other in the Best Actor category - that could get interesting.

Miley Cyrus will host the show. She's up for four awards herself, so it could be a very interesting night. The awards will be broadcast on Fox on August 5, so you've got plenty of time left to vote, teen readers.

    A Night at the Movies

AFI's 10 TOP 10 Feel like something a little bit different tonight? How about the countdown to end all countdowns, AFI's "10 Top 10"? Jessica Alba, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt will host CBS's countdown of the top 10 movies in 10 classic American film genres. The categories are animated, fantasy, gangster, sci fi, western, sports, mystery, romantic comedy, courtroom drama and epic. The whole show is three hours long and should include plenty of great clips between the red carpet moments we're used to.

    AFI's "10 Top 10" starts at 8:00 on CBS.

A Double Dose of Kathy Griffin

NUP_130981_0065 "My Life on the D-List" is back for a new season tonight at 9:00. Kathy is as busy as ever: we'll get to see her do stand-up at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. She's also set for a (totally real, I'm sure) date with Adnan Ghalib, Britney Spears' paparazzo ex. Kathy is also opening her very own leadership academy, just like her hero Oprah. Hey, I'm all for training up fiery little girls the world over.

Right after the season premiere of "My Life on the D-List" you can catch Bravo's first ever A-List Awards. What's the idea there? Well, as best I can tell Bravo decided to host an awards ceremony for...all of their own shows. It probably won't be the most legitimate awards show ever, but it should be fun. Kathy will be hosting.
