April 28 FOX Decides Not to Air Obama Press Conference LiveIn an ideal world, this wouldn't even be a headline or a blog post. Because as I've said before, I don't really believe that the big networks should drop everything to air a press conference live if there's no reasonable expectation of urgent news. Viewers who want to see such things live already have plenty of options in this day and age, and both from a journalistic and a financial perspective, carrying a politician's message for free and disappointing both viewers and advertisers doesn't make sense.
But the custom has been to air, if you will, on the side of caution.
Well, FOX announced it won't be broadcasting Obama's press conference about his first 100 days in office, set for tomorrow. While other networks will have to show some flexibility, FOX will be showing "Lie to Me."
All of this poses a few questions. FOX is owned by conservative Rupert Murdoch and which is the corporate sibling of FOX News, which has had more than its share of run-ins with Obama's campaign and his administration. Is it refusing to air the news conference out of ideology? Is it all about money or ratings? And is this the beginning of a trend, either with FOX or networks in general? I'm assuming it's more of a rare confluence than the start of a new posture. Airing the news conference live might risk running over into "American Idol," and I don't see why FOX would want to do that.
We'll see in the next few months, or sooner, if the Obama administration continues its pace of trying create prime-time news conferences.

"During a taping Monday of CBS' "Late Show," Letterman said he and Lasko married March 19 at the Teton County Courthouse in Choteau, Mont., but only after their truck got stuck on a muddy road. "Letterman and Lasko, whose son, Harry, was born in November 2003, didn't take an immediate honeymoon. The late-night host was back at work in New York on Monday to deliver the news -- and a few jokes about the marriage. "'Regina and I began dating in February of 1986, and I said, 'Well, things are going pretty good, let's just see what happens in about 10 years,''" Letterman, who turns 62 next month, said at the taping, according to a transcript." Well, my best wishes go out to the newlyweds. I wonder what you get David Letterman as a wedding gift... - Posted by Kate March 10 Guess Who's Headed to 'Melrose Place'
She'll play Violet, "a character whose disarming naivete masks the calculating, shrewd sex kitten within." They're dredging up memories of the incomparable Sydney over at Entertainment Weekly. Me? Well, I'm afraid that the addition of Ashlee Simpson to the mix probably means the addition of Papa Joe as producer, and that means that Violet will surely end up being more like sweet-but-deluded Alison (without the creepy sexual abuse, I'd assume). What do you guys think? Is this a good move on the CW's part or are they just getting desperate now? - Posted by Kate March 06 Andrew McCarthy Loves the 'Gossip'
I kind of love Andrew McCarthy for this role! I hope he'll get in touch with his evil side and be a bit more of a Steff than a Blaine. In case you haven't been following my reports on the "GG" spin-off with bated breath -- but you know you have been -- Brittany Snow will play Lily and CW darling Krysten Ritter will play her older sister Carol. - Posted by Kate February 27 'Gossip Girl' Producers May Have Found Their Lily
Who? Well, she was in John Tucker Must Die. And The Pacifier. She had a pretty long stint on "American Dreams." Still, my real sticking point isn't her acting bona fides -- because, let's face it, "young Lily Van Der Woodsen nee Rhodes" probably won't require much subtlety -- but the fact that she doesn't look like Kelly Rutherford. At all. And we know what the make-up people on "Gossip Girl" are like. Shudder. - Posted by Kate February 25 Hasselhoff? Yes! C.S.I.?...Not So MuchToday seems to be a day for wacky news! Apparently "CSI" was beat out on German TV by "Um Himmels Willen," a sitcom about...nuns! Wacky nuns! 7.3 million people watched it this week (and there are only 87 million people in Germany, according to Wikipedia). I...kind of love this. I mean, Sister Act was pretty great but Sister Act 2 killed the whole genre for me. Or so I thought! I'm intrigued.

Obviously I'm most excited about "Gossip Girl." Even though it's kind of a duh. And I regret to inform you that next Monday's episode is a rerun. Again. And I'm guessing the following week will be more of the same, since that would catch any newbies up completely. - Posted by Kate February 24 Enter Nostalgia: 'Melrose Place' Is Coming Back
"The CBS Par-produced "Melrose Place," an remake of the '90s series about a group of twentysomethings living in the trendy Melrose neighborhood of Los Angeles, was written by Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin ("Smallville"), who will serve as exec producers/showrunners. Endeavor-repped Guggenheim, who won an Oscar for "An Inconvenient Truth," will exec produce as well." I'm glad that "90210" is working out for the CW, but "Melrose Place" wasn't good the first time around. Seriously! Remember when Allison and Billy were supposed to get married but then she got all freaked out about being abused as a child and couldn't go through with the wedding? Ewww! The only good part about the show was Marcia Cross and she's a little busy with "Desperate Housewives," so they can't bring her back a la Jennie Garth or Shannen Doherty. Sigh. If we're really going for all out 90s nostalgia, can somebody bring back "Twin Peaks?" HBO? Showtime? AMC? - Posted by Kate February 23 It's a Man's World...Kind Of
The pilot is called "Ace in the Hole." It's about a nice (presumably sarcastic) guy living in the suburbs with his family and working as a driving instructor. I'm...not optimistic. Anyone want to tell me how this is the greatest idea for a sitcom ever? - Posted by Kate February 13 USA Ditches the Wife
Sure, I can watch "The Real Housewives of New York City" or "The Bachelor," but I'm going to have a reality TV hangover the next morning. No word yet on what Debra Messing will be up to next. - Posted by Kate February 11 Showtime Loves the Crazy
Seriously. They're worse than the Made of Honor posters. They're worse than the Marley & Me posters. They're worse than the Regis and Kelly selling car insurance or something posters. Hate the posters! That picture is a close approximation of the "Buck is a brawlin' biker" one. Anyway, I'm hoping that a new season of this show won't mean new posters. Take down the posters! And "bitach" is beyond played out. You might as well call someone a greaser or a tough. - Posted by Kate Sneak Peek: 'Breaking Bad'
If you're new to the show you should check it out! The pilot is streaming for free on AMC's website until the season premiere early next month. - Posted by Kate February 05 HBO Shows 'Big Love'...Some Big Love"Big Love" sure was off the air for a long time before it came back last month. Well, fear not Henrickson lovers, HBO has picked up the show for another season. Season four will start production later this year and air in 2010. - Posted by Kate Put Away Those Fancy New Boxes You Bought...Digital Switch Delayed Until SpringIn perhaps the first groundbreaking moment of his young presidency, Barack Obama announced that he would sign a bill that will delay the transition to digital television. Yup. Is this really what we care about as a nation? Apparently! With two ongoing wars, an economic crisis and quite a few juicy political scandals we're apparently all too busy to go out and buy one of those nifty converter boxes: "Some viewers have put off buying a new television or a converter box for their old one. Some are still waiting for government coupons discounting the price. Many are struggling to make the boxes work." The boxes don't work! The coupons haven't arrived! Actually, I'm sure you've heard that those coupons are costing the government a lot more than they budgeted for. The digital transition will now take place on June 12. - Posted by Kate January 23 A Match Made in TV Heaven?E! has announced that Elisabeth Moss (she plays Peggy on "Mad Men") and Fred Armiesen ("SNL's" Barack Obama) are engaged! This news comes just days after I read about them playing Rock Band together after Moss's Broadway show, Speed-the-Plow, lets out. Her former co-star Jeremy Piven is thrilled for the couple and will reportedly be sending over some salmon skin rolls. Okay, I totally made up that last part. - Posted by Kate January 22 Ty Pennington Does Even More Good
Pennington has personally put up $10,000 in reward money for information about a hit-and-run accident that left a relative of one of the show's producers in critical condition. What a guy, eh? - Posted by Kate Hail to the...Ratings Thief!Well, Raoul and I both enjoyed Tuesday's inauguration and apparently the rest of you did too! The broadcast made ratings history, according to the Hollywood Reporter: "Barack Obama's inauguration was one for the TV ratings history books. "Nielsen Media Research said 37.8 million viewers watched Tuesday's coverage of Obama's inauguration -- the most in recent decades." - Posted by Kate January 21 Obama Inauguration MomentsObviously, there was too much coverage of the inauguration for any human being to watch, and I didn't even try.
But a couple things I came across either live or after the fact puzzled me.
I was watching SportsCenter, and they had to get in on the action with regard to the nation's 44th president by pulling up famous 44s. Which strikes me as odd, but hey, I guess there's some kinship between Obama and Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Hank Aaron. Somehow, I don't think they did such a feature for W, Clinton or George H.W.
I did watch Obama and Roberts mangle the oath of office and wince because I knew people will be like, "Goes to show he can't speak without a teleprompter" again, even though he's shown countless times that yes, he can. But I never thought that someone would suggest that he might legitimately not be president because of it. But that's something FOX News' Chris Wallace mused about.
What else stood out as interesting, touching, odd, inappropriate, moving or otherwise for you?
- posted by Raoul January 05 Ann Coulter and 'Today'A little controversy has come up over conservative pundit Ann Coulter after NBC cancelled a scheduled "Today" appearance for her on Tuesday cancelled.
Network sources said she wasn't going to be welcomed back. That led to her complaining about liberal bias and the Drudge Report saying she was banned because of her various factual inaccuracies.
Then NBC said that it had only bumped her because of the news about the bombings in Gaza and the Obama administration and welcomed her to appear on Wednesday.
What's incredibly ironic about all this to me is that Coulter wants to promote her latest book about how liberals cling to "victimhood." And here she is claiming to be a "victim" of "Today" and NBC, which has had her appear whenever she's had a book out and which apparently only bumped her because it has legitimate news to cover.
ETA: Ann appeared on "Today" Wednesday so either NBC never really banned her and Coulter and/or Drudge whipped up a controversy over nothing or NBC did ban her and set a land-speed record for folding to pressure.
- posted by Raoul December 22 Hollywood Divided Over Potential Actors' Strike
According to union rules, SAG's 110,000 members must vote to authorize their executive board to consider a strike. At least 75% of current members have to say yes, so there's a whole lot of high-profile politicking going on. Variety has a nice breakdown: Who's yelling "Strike, strike, strike?" "SAG has attracted public support for the authorization via a solidarity statement on its website from 2,300 members including Laura Dern, Mel Gibson, Hal Holbrook, Holly Hunter, Matthew Madine, Sandra Oh and Charlie Sheen's father, Martin Sheen. Guild leaders have accused the congloms of using the economic downturn to intimidate actors away from seeking a fair share of new-media revenues as content migrates to new digital platforms." OK, so who's on the other side? "Over the weekend, opponents added John and Ann Cusack, Jeff Garlin, George Lopez, Virginia Madsen, Susan Sarandon and Charlie Sheen to the roster of stars urging a no vote. As of Sunday afternoon, 1,373 members had endorsed the No SAG Strike petition, written three weeks ago by Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman." This could get ugly fast! I think the only solution is a standard Hollywood-issue bring 'em all together Christmas movie. Ballots go out to SAG members on January 2, but we won't know the official results of the vote until January 24. - Posted by Kate |
